Identifying Chest Dominant Mixing: A Playlist

Posted Saturday, May 18th 2024 by Kristy Bissell
In this article, Kristy Bissell introduces the concept of Chest Dominant Mixing in singing and shares a curated playlist consisting of songs featuring Chest Dominant Mix sounds for singers to identify.

Hi, Singers! Today I have curated a playlist consisting of songs I find helpful for students learning how to produce Chest Dominant Mix sounds. But first...

What is Chest Dominant Mixing and should you use it?

It is the vocal production where we use more thyroid-arytenoid vocal fold production instead of more cricoid-thyroid dominant vocal production like in "Head Dominant" mixing! Fancy words, but never fear, we are going to simplify by listening to a playlist of songs!

If you are brand new to singing – listening is a major activity you will want to engage in so you can have a frame of reference for what you want your voice to do. It can be valuable for you to have a good sense of what you want before going to a voice teacher. Not all teachers, but some will immediately start putting you into a box unintentionally and that is something we don’t want! You are unique and special. No one out there is like you – go into that lesson asking for what you want and what you need. If you don’t know, of course, the teacher will assist – that is what we are here for! Me personally, I like teamwork! I want to help you achieve what it is you are going for.

This playlist consists of a variety of different singers from a wide range of genres. Some of these artists you may not suspect are that strong, but they are! Some of the singers will be very familiar to you – powerhouse voices – examples: Adele, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Hozier, Alicia Keys, Ed Sheeran, etc. Some of the songs on this list are stand-out performances for artists that don’t use Chest Dominant Mixing exclusively, but they use it in the specific song for Prosody.

What is Prosody you may ask? Prosody is where all the parts of the song line up to achieve a cohesive story. Everything is being done for the meaning of the song. Prosody is a word and concept I have been obsessing over since I heard it in a Songwriting class last year and now I always look for it in songs.

When you are listening to this playlist, there is a variety of things you can be thinking about but here are some questions you can ask yourself:

Do you like it? Would you use it yourself? Why or why not?

What is the song about? Does it call for Chest Voice or Chest Dominance? Would you do something differently with that song?

Happy listening! I look forward to sharing with you my Head Dominant playlist in my next article!
