Voice Lessons: Take the Chance! - "Gaining Confidence"
Posted Friday, May 12th 2023 by Andy King
Have you always wondered what it’s like to take a singing lesson? Have your nerves held you back from booking a session?
How long have you been taking lessons?
I’ve been taking lessons with Andy since 2016! So that’s about six years, give or take a little break when I worked for Royal Caribbean. I also looked back and found that I’ve had 75 sessions from January 2019 to now. To sum it up…a very long time!
Why are you taking lessons?
One day I’m going to perform in National Tours and on Broadway. I want to not only be confident enough to audition for those shows but to be a strong enough singer to book them. I’ll always consider myself as a dancer first, but Andy is helping me become a singer too!
What do you love most about voice lessons?
I love seeing, feeling, and hearing the growth from week to week. I also love working on songs that will get me prepped and ready for any audition.
What have you learned in your lessons?
I’ve learned to be confident with my voice. To own my voice. To actually sing 16-32 bars in an audition! When I walked into my very first lesson with Andy I had no idea how to sing. I was shy, embarrassed, and knew nothing about how to use my voice and read sheet music. Little by little Andy taught me everything. Just last year I booked my very first musical and sang a full song solo at a voice recital. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without Andy’s help.
What advice would you give to someone considering taking lessons?
Go for it. I know it seems scary to do things outside of your comfort zone but when you overcome that fear and succeed, it’s such a rewarding and empowering feeling!
If you could go back in time to your first lesson what advice would you give yourself?
Relax and breathe. You got this. It’s going to be a long journey, but Andy is the best. He’s going to help you live your dreams.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I wouldn't be where I am in my career if it weren't for Andy's amazing help, guidance, and dedication. He creates such an inviting space that you feel comfortable to work hard, feel inspired, and grow in every single lesson. He has helped me create a full audition book of 6-8 songs that I can confidently sing in the room. Every time I show up he has new ideas and focuses to work on together. And without fail, I always live each lesson happier than when I came in. Happier, inspired, and hungry to go back for more!
